Miss Virginia tells the true story of Virginia Walden Ford, a struggling single mother who is determined to prevent her teenaged son from being swallowed up by the rough streets of Washington, D.C. When his neighborhood school fails him, she puts him in a private school and gets a second job. And when she still can’t pay the tuition, she launches a movement to ensure that her son—and thousands of kids just like him—have access to that basic civil right: a good education.

I had the great honor of writing the screenplay for this film, which stars Emmy winner Uzo Aduba (Orange Is the New Black), Golden Globe winner Matthew Modine (Stranger Things, Full Metal Jacket), Vanessa Williams (Desperate Housewives), Niles Fitch (This Is Us), and Amirah Vann (How to Get Away with Murder, Underground).

Available on Netflix, iTunes, Amazon, and hundreds of other platforms.

“One of those few stories that show how one person can make a difference if they fight hard enough.” —Aced

“With so much going on in our country that divides us, Miss Virginia is a reminder of a time in our not-so-distant past when we put aside our pettiness and divisiveness, our shallow need for popularity, and did what was right to ensure that those we bring into this world are given chances better than ours when we leave it. That maybe the institutions, in their slow, meandering ways, are still capable of change, especially when a community becomes too resilient, from years of frustration, to be pushed away.” —Elements of Madness
